Using videooconferencing is a cost effective and time saving means of communication which also reduces the institutions carbon footprint due to reduced needs for travel to remote destinations.

The statistical information below includes all Newcastle University hosted videoconference calls hosted using the Zoom platform:-


Between August 2018 and July 2019:-

  • 5436 videoconference calls were hosted by Newcastle University
  • 20,006 remote sites globally connected to Newcastle University

Had all remote participants travelled to Newcastle this would have resulted in an estimated 11,022 metric tonnes of travel-related CO2 emissions and 35,000,000 miles of travel


Between August 2017 and July 2018: -

  • 1845 videoconference calls were hosted by Newcastle University
  • 6829 remote sites globally connected to Newcastle University

Had all remote participants travelled to Newcastle this would have resulted in an estimated 6,271 metric tonnes of travel-related CO2 emissions and 19,700,000 miles of travel
